Smiles, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Running

Owen has interacted more this morning than ever. Byron said he was smiling and "talking". How cool is that?!

My sister bought some books for my niece for her birthday in March and Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne was one of them. As we all were looking through the books after she opened them, my mom reported that she read Now We Are Six to us as kids. I bought my own copy and have been reading it to Owen. I just love the sing song rhythm. So, I will put one of the poems here for your pleasure:

DOWN BY THE POND

I'm fishing.
Don't talk, anybody, don't come near!
Can't you see that the fish might hear?
He thinks I'm playing with a piece of string;
He thinks I'm another sort of funny sort of thing,
But he doesn't know I'm fishing-
He doesn't know I'm fishing.
That's what I'm doing-
Fishing.

No, I'm not. I'm newting.
Don't cough, anybody, don't come by!
Any small noise makes a newt feel shy.
He thinks I'm a bush, or a new sort of tree;
He thinks it's somebody, but doesn't think it's Me,
And he doesn't know I'm newting-
No, he doesn't know I'm newting.
That's what I'm doing-
Newting.

Lastly, Debbie is my accountability partner in a running quest. I have not actually gone on a run yet since I think that I should wait until my doc appointment. However, I don't know if I can wait that long. I will do other things to get myself ready to run though. If I can only run a mile, I might get discouraged. I know Andrea T. is gearing up for Hawaii and she is running too. Keep it up Andrea! We are feeling the pain with you!

Four Weeks. Yesterday...

Dear Owen,

Yesterday, you turned four weeks old. I can't believe how fast time has gone already. No matter how many times people told me that I need to cherish these times because they go fast, I didn't truly understand it until now.

You are in the habit of wrinkling your forehead and looking out of the top of your eyes. Your daddy keeps saying, "He is so bloody cute!"

You spoiled your dad by smiling at him on Father's Day. What a perfect present. We do try to coax more smiles out of you as best we can. Maybe this next week.

We gave you a bottle this week. We knew we needed to try to give you one in the first five weeks of life so later you can still eat if I am not available.

I am getting you and I into more of a structured schedule and can now take showers, work out, clean, nap, blog, balance the checkbook, or watch tv while you nap.

You are officially sleeping in your crib now and have graduated from the bassinet. Sometimes we use a white noise maker with the sounds of a car shifting. It knocks you out every time.

You weigh somewhere around 9 pounds and 7 ounces. Everyone says you look different each time they see you. I do think you feel heavier.

The softball game last Tuesday was fun. I took you to the car to feed and change you. You pooped your pants and needed a clean diaper. You were in my lap and I pulled the diaper off only to have you poop two more times during the diaper change. After I got that all cleaned up, I felt warmth on my shirt only to discover that you were now peeing. Luckily, I brought another shirt. You definitely know how to break me in!

Is It Monday?

Since I am not officially in the outside working force I seem to forget what day each day is. Sunday is the only way I know that the week starts over again. Fridays don’t quite have the same excitement as they used to, ha. I am going to start purposing each day for different things (ie: Errand day, Cleaning day, Desk day). It seems that I need some sort of structure (what me?). Owen is falling into a great schedule too, which makes life a little more predictable. Stay tuned for his four-week letter (with pictures).

The Illusionist.

I would have to pick the Illusionist because I found The Prestige to be too dark and creepy.

Your Opinion.

Today I pose a question and tomorrow I will give you my answer.

The question is:

Which movie did you like better, The Illusionist (released on September 1, 2006) or The Prestige (released on October 20, 2006)?

Three Weeks Old.

Let me preface this post by saying that I am going to steal an idea from dooce in the fact that she writes her daughter a letter each month telling her about her happenings and how she has changed. I thought it would be a great way to document Owen's little life and especially so my sister can keep tabs on her little nephew across the states.

Dear Owen,

This week you went to the doctor again to discover that you now weigh 9 pounds and that you are doing good. That day was an "outing" day and it wore you out. Once we got home, you cried the rest of the night and continued it on into the next day. We thought you might have colic and we began to dread the next few months since we heard that colic can last up to six months or so. After a little research and thinking, we decided that you might just need more sleep. Now you get a little fussy before naptime and that is about it. Otherwise you eat, have awake time where you are happy as a clam, and then you go down for a nap just as expected. You really do spoil us now.

I got to show you off to several of my former co-workers whose voices you heard for all those months. Upon picking you up, my boss whispered "Go Lakers" into you ear just to spite your Daddy.

Sunday was Father's Day. We woke Daddy up with a present and breakfast. Time seemed to melt away and we ended up being late to church, but we didn't care. Our family got presented with three roses during the church service. You did perfectly at church without a peep. Rosy Nelson, Virginia Wallett, Alpha Frank, and Mary Clausen all got to hold you. We went to Papa Berger's (Grandpa Eichelberger) house for lunch to celebrate Father's Day and snapped a four generation picture (see below). Papa Berger might just have nicknamed you Dagwood since he thought about calling your cousin, Sara, Blondie.

You experienced your first actual bath with the help of Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Stephanie, and cousins Kielty and Will. You actually don't mind the bath, which is good because you spit up a bit and can get stinky quick.

Jayci's mom, Merrianne, stopped by to bring us dinner and to hold you for the first time. She is on her way to see her granddaughter, Isabella, today. I can't wait for you to meet Isabella!

This next week might have more excitement in it, Daddy has a softball game tonight to start it off.

I love you kiddo and am grateful for every moment with you!

Love, Momma

Baby Doc Appointment.

Owen was born at 8 pounds 7 ounces on Tuesday, May 29th. Thursday, May 31st, he left the hospital at 8 pounds. The next Monday, June 4th, we went to his first doctor's appointment and he weighed in at 8 pounds 10 ounces. Everyone seemed to be pretty amazed at that. The doctor seemed skeptical and said that we would have to confirm it with his weight at his next doc appointment. Byron and I took Owen in yesterday and he weighed in at 9 pounds. So, yup, he is a-gaining-weight. Wahoo!

He Arrived and We Are Home!

Hello Everyone! We all are alive and well! I don't have much time to leave a long story here (surprise, surprise), but I know you all are wondering and have probably checked my sister's or Kelly's blogs to get the details (by the way he did weigh 8 lbs, 7 .2 ounces). Here are a few pictures we snapped yesterday as we dressed Owen up in his "take home" outfit. The red outfit was actually Byron's when he was a month old. His mom had made it for him. Even though Owen is a big boy, the outfit was still a bit big. Kelly is right, he does look exactly like his daddy. I will try to scan Byron's newborn picture and post it here with Owen's. It is quite amazing.

Anyways, I hope this will tide you all over until I get the chance to give you all a play by play.
